Zorritos is a coastal town in northern Peru and the capital of Contralmirante Villar Province, in the Tumbes Region. It is located along the Pan-American Highway North and is known for its beaches, fishing tradition and importance during the early years of the South American oil industry.
Unlike other beach destinations in northern Peru with a more active nightlife, Zorritos mainly offers beach activities, relaxation, seafood cuisine and excursions to other areas along the Tumbes coastline.
The modern history of Zorritos is closely linked to oil extraction. In November 1863, the first recorded oil well in South America was drilled in this area to an approximate depth of 24 or 25 meters. This event made Zorritos an important location in the early development of Peru’s hydrocarbon industry.
The monument dedicated to the first oil well commemorates the date of November 2, 1863. It is located beside the Pan-American Highway North and is one of the historical sites that can be visited in the town.
Contralmirante Villar Province was established on November 25, 1942, through Law No. 9667. The law designated Zorritos as its capital.

Zorritos Beach is located approximately 27 km south of the city of Tumbes, beside the Pan-American Highway North. The road is paved, and the journey by car or taxi may take around 35 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
The beach resort is located at an approximate elevation of 4 meters above sea level.
Zorritos is not 2 km from Máncora. Máncora belongs to Talara Province in the Piura Region, while Zorritos belongs to Tumbes. The driving distance between the two towns is approximately 73 to 76 km.
From the city of Tumbes
From Tumbes, travel south along the Pan-American Highway North. The distance to Zorritos Beach is approximately 27 km, and the journey by taxi or car may take around 35 minutes.
Intercity transportation also operates along the coastal route. Schedules, stops and fares should be confirmed locally.
From Tumbes Airport
Capitán FAP Pedro Canga Rodríguez Airport is located north of the city of Tumbes. From the airport, visitors can take a taxi or prearranged transportation to Zorritos, usually passing through the city and continuing along the Pan-American Highway North.
Before entering a vehicle, it is advisable to agree on the fare, check the driver’s identification and use authorized transportation services.
From Máncora
From Máncora, travel north along the Pan-American Highway, passing through areas of Contralmirante Villar Province. The road journey is approximately 73 to 76 km and may take around one and a half hours, depending on traffic and stops.
Zorritos Beach is the main attraction of the resort. It features an extensive sandy coastline and is located near accommodations, restaurants and urban services.

Wave and current conditions may vary. Before entering the sea, visitors should observe warning flags, signs and instructions from local authorities or lifeguards, when available.
Zorritos can be visited throughout the year. The official information sheet for Zorritos Beach does not establish a closing season.
Between December and April, temperatures are generally higher. This period also coincides with the rainy season in northern Peru, which may intensify during El Niño events. Rainfall can activate ravines and temporarily affect roads or certain beaches.
Between May and November, there is generally less rainfall and temperatures are slightly milder. For travelers who prioritize coastal walks and overland excursions, these months may offer more stable conditions. Between July and October, the regional humpback whale-watching season takes place.
