Portada / About Peru / Arequipa City / Parks and Squares Arequipa

This white city, so named because most of its buildings are made of white sillar stone, boasts one of the most beautiful main squares in the country. Walking through its surrounding streets while tasting some of the city’s famous sweets is a truly pleasant experience.

History

Public spaces have played a fundamental role in the city of Arequipa, serving as meeting places for historical events, celebrations, and leisure moments for both locals and tourists. Since colonial times, the city was planned around a main square in the Spanish style, surrounded by important civil and religious buildings. Over the years, Arequipa has developed a network of squares and parks, each with its own history.

Main squares and parks

Plaza de Armas of Arequipa: This is one of the most emblematic public spaces in Peru. Surrounded by colonial buildings and facing the imposing Cathedral of Arequipa, the square is a meeting point for locals and visitors.

Selva Alegre Park in Arequipa: Selva Alegre Park is considered the “Garden of the City” because of its wide green areas and large trees, making it practically the only green lung currently found in the historic center of Arequipa.

San Francisco Square in Arequipa: This square is home to the convent of the same name and is an ideal place to relax after walking through the streets of Arequipa’s historic center. Here, visitors can admire the beauty of colonial art and the impressive religious buildings that surround it.
