Vilcabamba Trek to Machu Picchu 5 days

Drive from Cusco and Crossing Malaga Pass

The journey begins early with hotel pickup and private transportation to Huancacalle. The road passes through Chinchero, at approximately 3,760 meters, and Ollantaytambo, at around 2,850 meters. It then continues to Malaga Pass, the highest point of the drive, at approximately 4,315 meters.

During the descent through the Amaybamba Valley, we may see snowcapped peaks and cloud forest scenery. Our vehicle passes through Chaullay and continues to Huancacalle, at approximately 3,000 meters. The drive to Huancacalle takes approximately seven hours.

Arrival in Huancacalle

Upon arrival, we will settle into our accommodation. The guide will explain the plans for the following days, the luggage to be carried by the mules, and the trail conditions.

Archaeological Sites of Vilcabamba

After breakfast, we will visit Vitcos Rosaspata, located at approximately 3,080 meters, and Ñustahispana, at around 3,050 meters. These places form part of Vilcabamba’s history and help us better understand the territory associated with the last Incas.

Hike to Racachaca

The route continues through Andean vegetation and crosses the Pumachaca and Azutina passes, situated at approximately 4,000 and 3,900 meters above sea level, respectively. We will also pass through Inka Wasi before reaching Racachaca, at approximately 3,700 meters, where we will set up our first campsite. The total estimated hiking time is around eight hours.

Crossing the Mountain Passes

The third day takes us through Hatun Pampa and across three high mountain passes: Yanacocha, at approximately 4,420 meters, and Tullu Tacana and Mojón, both near 4,500 meters above sea level. From the highest sections, we may enjoy views of Mount Salkantay, weather permitting.

Along the way, we will pass through Andean landscapes and areas near local communities. Our guide will organize rest stops and accompany us throughout this hike, where we may encounter cold temperatures, wind, and sudden changes in weather.

Descent to Laccococha

After lunch, we will begin our descent to Laccococha, located at approximately 3,600 meters above sea level. There, we will set up our second campsite. This day's hike takes around seven hours, although the duration may vary depending on the group's pace and trail conditions.

Descent through Mutuypata and Yanatile

The day begins early with a descent through the forest of Mutuypata, at approximately 3,250 meters above sea level. This area features orchids, other humid forest plants, coffee plantations, and fruit trees. As the landscape changes, temperatures become warmer, and mosquitoes may be present.

We will continue hiking to Yanatile, located at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level. This stage involves around seven hours of hiking.

Transfers to Aguas Calientes

From Yanatile, we will travel by vehicle to Santa Teresa and then to Hydroelectric Station. There, we will board the tourist train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, we will check into our accommodation for the final night.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

We will start the day early, departing from our accommodation at approximately 5:30 a.m., after breakfast. From Aguas Calientes, we will take the tourist bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu, located at approximately 2,400 meters above sea level.

Once inside the Inca citadel, we will enjoy a guided tour along the assigned circuit, learning about its main historical and architectural features. The route and duration of the visit will depend on the confirmed admission ticket.

If you would like to visit Huayna Picchu, you will need a separate admission ticket compatible with your Machu Picchu entry time and circuit. This activity is not part of the regular itinerary.

Return to Cusco

After visiting Machu Picchu, we will return to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch at your own expense before continuing the journey.

We will then take the return train and continue by road to Cusco, according to the schedules and services confirmed for your reservation.
