Flight from Cusco to the city of Puerto Maldonado, known as the Capital of Biodiversity. A car ride will take you to the port to begin the Amazon adventure with a 45-minute boat ride along the winding banks of the Madre de Dios River. The motorized boat will take you to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, nestled in the heart of the rainforest. After a brief welcome talk, settle into your cabin, located within the first private Ecological Reserve in Peru; preserved by Inkaterra since 1975 due to its sensitive environment.
After lunch, return to your rustic luxury cabin for a nap or relax in your hammock. You can then choose activities from a wide variety of a la carte excursions accompanied by your experienced Inkaterra Explorer Guide. We recommend exploring the Trochas System for an introduction to the intricate biodiversity of the Amazon basin and the different layers of the rainforest. Walk surrounded by impressive trees, such as the Shihuahuaco, while your ears perceive the songs and whispers of the exotic wildlife inhabiting this ecosystem. These are ideal opportunities for bird watching and enjoying the abundant plant life. Have your camera ready in case sloths or monkeys appear in the trees.
At sunset, we recommend taking our pleasant Night River excursion to see how the jungle transforms into a nocturnal world, giving way to species adapted to the shadows of the night. You may encounter nightjars, owls, capybaras, and hidden caimans on the banks. An Amazon-inspired dinner awaits you in the main dining room from 7:00-10:00 PM, where we invite you to toast with your complimentary Pisco Sour. Returning to your comfortable cabin, you can rest while being lulled by the symphony of creatures inhabiting the surrounding forest.
The sunlight filters through the thickness of the trees as the inhabitants of the jungle awaken from their slumber. You can join them early with the buffet breakfast available from 05:30. Visit Lake Sandoval this morning, a sparkling mirror of water found within the Tambopata National Reserve. Board a carved wooden canoe and paddle gently through the water channels that feed the lake, then navigate it, flanked by beautiful palm trees. This serene lake is home to various bird species, the threatened river wolf, howler monkeys, macaws, anacondas, turtles, black caimans, among other animals. Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica in time for lunch. In the afternoon, we recommend ascending the thrilling Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and walking the Anaconda Walk.
The Inkaterra Canopy Walkway is a secure and sophisticated system of hanging bridges built ecologically at 344 meters (1,135 feet) high, connected by eight platforms and two panoramic observation towers. This is an unforgettable opportunity to observe the Amazon forest from the treetops and understand its dimension. Ascend the first tower to 38 meters (124 feet) above the ground, with your senses alert looking for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and the elusive three-toed sloth. Extend your elevated visit to enjoy the sunset with cocktails from an observation tower, or spend a unique night in a treehouse designed with surprising amenities (additional cost services).
Upon descent, take a 30-minute walk along the Anaconda Walk: an elevated wooden platform 200 meters (656 feet) long, built over a flooded forest of aguaje palms. In this sumptuous ecosystem, you can observe various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, and interesting trees. Back at the lodge, you can enjoy our daily nature presentation at the Eco Center or book a spa treatment. A la carte dinner awaits you from 7:00 PM.
Take a 25-minute boat trip to Chacra and Quebrada de Gamitana to discover more mysteries of the rainforest. The Amazon is an almost inexhaustible source of exotic fruits and vegetables, many of which have healing properties benefiting the local communities living in the remote jungle. In the Gamitana model farm, surrounded by the sounds and aromas of the Amazon, you can see up close how a variety of ingredients are grown by local farmers, as well as taste seasonal fruits. Walk through a trail of dense vegetation under the green canopy to reach the Gamitana Creek. This dark and muddy water creek is inhabited by piranhas, caimans, turtles, and birds hiding on its banks.
Return to Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica for lunch. Sail 35 minutes upstream to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, built on an old cocoa and rubber plantation in the 1950s. Founded by Catholic missionaries, this property functioned as a medical and ecological studies center. With over 200 different plant species, see why the Amazon is considered the world's largest pharmacy and learn up close about its uses and benefits. Then enjoy a relaxing 30-minute canoe ride in search of turtles, diving birds, nightjars, and herons before returning to your lodge.
Under the moonlight, dare to take the Night Forest excursion. Equipped with lanterns, walk among the foliage while your senses perceive the movements in the vegetation and the night sounds of the forest emerging from different directions around you. Along with your Explorer Guide, find animal activity and observe species that only emerge at night.
Enjoy your last day surrounded by nature, while parrots sing among the trees and squirrel monkeys sneak through vibrant gardens. An environment with a surprising amount of wildlife recorded inside and around Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica (540 bird species have been inventoried in the property's areas). Check-out is at 10:00 AM; depending on the time of your return flight, lunch can be arranged for this day (additional cost applies).
