Huayna Picchu Mountain is located at 2,667 (8,750 ft) meters above sea level, on the northern side of the Machu Picchu citadel.
Huayna Picchu is a Quechua word: “Wayna” means young and “Picchu” means mountain, so its translation is “Young Mountain”. It is considered the opposite of the also famous Machu Picchu Mountain, which means “Old Mountain.”
The trail to reach the summit of this mountain is challenging, as it includes steep stairways and very narrow paths.
Huayna Picchu has a viewpoint at the top that offers one of the best views of the Machu Picchu citadel. Along the slopes, you can also see Inca agricultural terraces and a partially built temple known as the “Temple of the Moon.”
To access Huayna Picchu, you must purchase in advance the entrance ticket for Royalty Circuit 3 + Huayna Picchu. With this ticket, you will have access to the Machu Picchu citadel (Lower Section) and Huayna Picchu Mountain. Be sure to reserve your ticket at least 3 months in advance.
You must reach the Machu Picchu citadel either on foot or by bus. Then, continue walking to the control checkpoint through Royalty Circuit 3 + Huayna Picchu, which starts from the lower part of the citadel. The ascent takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the hiker’s physical condition.

Before purchasing your ticket, first check availability for your travel date. Due to high demand, tickets sell out quickly, so you should make your reservation at least 3 months in advance.
