Information about Banks and Payments in Peru

The Peruvian financial system is regulated by the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance, and Private Pension Funds (SBS). Before making deposits, transfers, or contracting financial services, it is recommended to verify that the institution is authorized by the SBS.

Peru has banks, financial companies, municipal savings banks, rural savings banks, and other supervised institutions. Among the banks with the greatest commercial presence are BCP, BBVA, Interbank, and Scotiabank, although the availability of branches, ATMs, and services may vary depending on the city or region.

In the country’s main cities, most hotels, restaurants, and tourism establishments accept credit and debit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and American Express. However, for markets, small businesses, rural areas, or local services, it is recommended to carry cash in soles.

US dollar bills

The use of traveler’s checks is limited in Peru. Only some banks and hotels may accept them, so it is recommended to check in advance before traveling or before trying to use them as a payment method.
