Huayna Picchu Tour

This tour combines Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu (two admission tickets), allowing you to visit the citadel and climb the mountain on the same day. Huayna Picchu (also spelled Wayna Picchu) is the peak that appears behind the ruins in the classic photos. The climb starts in the northern sector of Machu Picchu, next to the Sacred Rock.

The ascent takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on your pace. The descent takes about the same amount of time. Plan on approximately 2 to 3 hours in total for the climb, time at the summit, and the return. The trail is short but steep, with narrow stone steps, exposed sections, and chains to hold onto in some places. It is not recommended if you are afraid of heights or are not in good physical condition.

Itinerary

Day 1

Tour Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu

Pickup in Cusco – Huayna Picchu hike, approximately 2–3 hours – citadel and classic photo – return to your hotel.

Very early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco for a 1-hour-and-30-minute ride in an agency vehicle to the train station in the town of Ollantaytambo. There, you will board the train that travels through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, taking you from the Andes to the edge of the high jungle.

The train ride takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, our representative will be waiting to help you board the bus to the citadel of Machu Picchu. The bus ride takes approximately 25 minutes.

This tour includes two admission tickets: the first (Circuit 1 or 2) allows you to explore the citadel, and the second allows you to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain (Royalty Circuit 3, or the lower section, + Wayna Picchu Mountain). You will hike to the summit accompanied by our professional guide. The ascent takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The climb has many small steps, and the final section is very steep, so caution is recommended. The descent takes approximately 1 hour.

After descending, you will enter the citadel of Machu Picchu through Circuit 1 or 2 (depending on availability), where you can take the classic postcard photo. Our guide will then begin the citadel tour. The guided tour lasts 2 to 3 hours. You will visit Machu Picchu’s agricultural and urban areas and learn about the history, customs, and architecture of this Inca monument.

Finally, after the Machu Picchu tour, you will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Our driver will be waiting at Ollantaytambo station to take you to your hotel in Cusco.

IMPORTANT: Admission to Wayna Picchu is limited to 400 visitors per day, so booking mountain tickets in advance is recommended. We suggest checking the train companies’ official websites to confirm current schedules and staying alert to possible changes in departure and arrival times. Arriving at the station with enough time will help you board the train smoothly.

What recommendations should you follow for the 1-day Huayna Picchu tour?

Book in advance (especially Huayna Picchu, as availability is limited).
Bring your passport or ID.
Arrive at the train station at least 30 minutes before departure.
Wear comfortable shoes with good traction: Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu have many steps.
Bring a small backpack with a camera, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and water.
Huayna Picchu has narrow stairways and sections with steep drop-offs. Follow your guide’s instructions and climb carefully.
The baggage allowance on the train is up to 5 kg.

Both Julio and Henry did a great job with super information the first 2 days. The buffet lunch the tour provided was top shelf, including sushi. On day 3 Eddy did a wonderful job explaining all of Machu Picchu. My tour was for Circuit 1, but he somehow managed to get me on Circuit 3 as well. It was a day I will never forget.  Verified Highly recommended The trip was great! Our driver Roselito picked us up from the hotel and was very knowledgeable in the history of region, took us on the scenic route. Once we got on the train, it included snacks and drinks (water, coffee, or tea). Once we got to Aguascalientes, we were met by our tour guide Renato and Norma. Norma made sure we met our tour guide Renato, and made sure we got on the bus. Once we arrived at the entrance of Machu Pichu, we were met by our tour guide Renato. It was a pleasant experience. Pictures don’t do the site justice. Our tour guide Renato gave us an overview of the site and significance of the layout.  Verified Fun and exciting! I had a custom 9-day tour. I told the booking agents the things I wanted see and do in Peru and they came up with an itinerary. I really enjoyed all the day trips and when I needed to make an adjustment during the tour, Efrain (my coordinator) was right on it.
