Horseback riding Cusco and nearby archaeological sites

This horseback riding Cusco experience combines an approximately one-hour ride through fields outside the city with guided visits to Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Tambomachay and Puka Pukara. The full program lasts about four hours and includes hotel pickup, transportation, a professional guide, a horse handler, one horse per participant, a saddle, a riding helmet and entrance tickets to the listed sites.

The morning begins with visits to Sacsayhuaman and Qenqo. Transportation then continues to the ranch, where participants receive basic instructions before mounting. After the ride, the group returns to the vehicle to visit Tambomachay and Puka Pukara before traveling back to the hotel.

This horse riding Cusco option is suitable for travelers who want to combine outdoor activity with cultural visits without using a full day. It should not be advertised as four hours in the saddle: actual riding time is approximately one hour, while the remaining time covers transportation, briefings and walking visits.

Highlights

  • Approximately one hour of riding through fields and trails outside Cusco.
  • Guided visits to Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Tambomachay and Puka Pukara.
  • Basic instructions before mounting and support from a horse handler.
  • Hotel pickup and return transportation.
  • Published gear: horse, saddle and riding helmet.
  • Private service from two passengers, according to the current offer.

Cusco horseback riding itinerary

Pickup is scheduled at approximately 9:00 a.m., with return between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. CuscoPeru should confirm one standard finishing time before publication. Timing may change according to the hotel location, traffic, the pace of the visits and weather conditions.

Hotel pickup

The team collects travelers from their hotel within the operating area in Cusco. Before departure, the guide outlines the morning and checks whether anyone needs additional assistance for riding or walking above 3,000 meters.

Transfer and visit to Sacsayhuaman

The current page estimates a twenty-minute transfer to Sacsayhuaman. The guided visit takes place on foot and covers the architecture and importance of the complex. Actual travel and visit times depend on access, traffic and the group's pace.

Visit to Qenqo

The tour continues by vehicle to Qenqo. The current content describes its stone galleries and connects the site's name with the idea of a labyrinth. The guide provides the historical explanation during the walking visit.

Arrival at the ranch and riding instructions

After Qenqo, the group travels to the ranch. Each participant is assigned a horse, and the team adjusts the saddle and helmet. Before setting out, the horse handler explains posture, basic rein use, safe spacing and how to stop.

Travelers should state whether this is their first ride and report any physical concern. The horse and pace should be selected according to experience, height, weight and the operating team's assessment.

One-hour ride through the countryside

The ride lasts approximately one hour and follows fields and trails outside Cusco. This section provides views of the Andean landscape and nearby rural areas. The exact route and pace depend on trail conditions, weather and the guide's and horse handler's assessment.

Participants do not enter the archaeological complexes while mounted. This clear wording should replace the current note, which may leave readers uncertain about whether the listed sites are visited at all.

Return to the ranch

At the end of the circuit, the group returns to the ranch, dismounts with assistance and hands back the equipment. The guide checks that everyone is comfortable before the tour continues by vehicle.

Visit to Tambomachay

Transportation continues to Tambomachay. The site is visited on foot, with an explanation of its channels, fountains and association with water during the Inca period.

Visit to Puka Pukara

The final archaeological stop is Puka Pukara, a name commonly translated as “red fortress.” The guide explains the attributed function of the complex and its position along an old route into Cusco.

Return to Cusco

After the last visit, transportation returns travelers to their hotel. The full itinerary gives an estimated arrival at 1:30 p.m., while the summary says 1:00 p.m. A time range is preferable until Operations confirms the standard schedule.

AN UNFORGETTABLE HORSEBACK RIDING EXPERIENCE IN CUSCO WITH CRISTINA

I would like to share the wonderful experience we had during our visit to Cusco. Among the activities we enjoyed, the horseback riding tour was one of our favorites, offering a different way to discover the landscapes around the city and connect with nature.

The ride was very enjoyable and was accompanied by an attentive team, with friendly and knowledgeable guides who showed great understanding of the places we visited. The hotels provided were comfortable, clean, and well located, which made our stay even more pleasant. We are taking home wonderful memories from this trip, and if we return to Cusco, we would definitely choose this agency again.

Tudo perfeito Eu e meu marido adoramos o passeio.

Cusco & Machu Picchu It was very well done. CuscoPeru did a fantastic job with my tour. Efrain picked me up on time at the airport. Both Julio and Henry did a great job with super information the first 2 days. The buffet lunch the tour provided was top shelf, including sushi. On day 3 Eddy did a wonderful job explaining all of Machu Picchu. My tour was for Circuit 1, but he somehow managed to get me on Circuit 3 as well. It was a day I will never forget. All hotel accommodations were very comfortable. I would recommend this tour to anyone

Highly recommended The trip was great! Our driver Roselito picked us up from the hotel and was very knowledgeable in the history of region, took us on the scenic route. Once we got on the train, it included snacks and drinks (water, coffee, or tea). Once we got to Aguascalientes, we were met by our tour guide Renato and Norma. Norma made sure we met our tour guide Renato, and made sure we got on the bus. Once we arrived at the entrance of Machu Pichu, we were met by our tour guide Renato. It was a pleasant experience. Pictures don’t do the site justice. Our tour guide Renato gave us an overview of the site and significance of the layout. I highly recommend booking with the company, and if possible make sure you get Roselito as your driver from Cusco to the train station.

Fun and exciting! I had a custom 9-day tour. I told the booking agents the things I wanted see and do in Peru and they came up with an itinerary. I really enjoyed all the day trips and when I needed to make an adjustment during the tour, Efrain (my coordinator) was right on it. He was always available to answer my questions, which really made me feel comfortable travelling alone. Also, the tour guides and drivers were very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I highly recommend CuscoPeru to anyone who wants interesting/fun tours and/or needs a little assistance in planning what to do!

Frequently asked questions about the horseback tour Cusco

Can I join if I have never ridden a horse?

Yes, you can take part even if this is your first time on a horse. Before setting out, you will receive simple instructions on posture, rein use and how to stop. Let us know when booking that you are a beginner so the team can consider this when assigning your horse and assisting you during the ride.

Are all four hours spent on horseback?

No. The complete tour lasts approximately four hours, but the horseback ride itself is around one hour. The remaining time covers hotel pickup, transportation and guided visits to Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Tambomachay and Puka Pukara.

Do riders enter the archaeological sites on horseback?

No. To protect the archaeological sites and allow time for the guide's explanations, these visits are made on foot. Transportation between the complexes is by vehicle, while the horseback section begins at the ranch and follows fields and trails outside Cusco.

Can altitude affect the experience even though the ride is short?

Yes. Some travelers may feel tired, short of breath or develop a headache because the tour takes place at approximately 3,200 to 3,400 meters above sea level. If you have just arrived in Cusco, allow time to rest and stay hydrated. Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell during the tour so they can assist you.

Are there age, weight or medical restrictions?

Participation is assessed according to each traveler's age, weight, mobility and general condition. If you are traveling with children, are pregnant, or have balance problems or a back, hip or knee condition, contact us before booking. We will review your situation with the horse-handling team and let you know whether the activity is suitable for you.

What happens if rain makes the trail unsafe?

Light rain does not always prevent the tour from operating, so bring a poncho or waterproof jacket during the rainy season. If the guide decides that the trail conditions are not suitable, the route may be adjusted or the ride may be stopped. Our team will explain the available alternatives according to the service conditions.
