The Rainbow Mountain ATV tour begins early in Cusco and travels through the South Valley to Pitumarca, Checacupe, and the Ccairahuiri ATV base.
After an Andean buffet breakfast, you will visit the bridges of Checacupe and continue to the ATV base. There, you will receive safety instructions, learn how to operate the vehicle, and complete a practice session. Once the instructor confirms that you can ride safely, you will begin an approximately 20- to 30-minute ride to the closest authorized point near Vinicunca.
This Rainbow Mountain ATV tour from Cusco combines high-altitude scenery with time to see the mountain's natural bands of color, created by minerals in the soil. Transportation, breakfast, buffet lunch, entrance, ATV, safety equipment, and a professional bilingual guide are included. The group returns to Cusco in the afternoon.
Day 1
Hotel pickup and drive through the South Valley
Your ATV Rainbow Mountain experience begins with pickup from your Cusco hotel at approximately 4:00 a.m. You will travel for about two hours through the South Valley toward Pitumarca. Because this is an early departure on a high-altitude route, the schedule may vary slightly on the day of the tour.
Andean buffet breakfast in Pitumarca
Upon arrival in Pitumarca, the group will stop for an Andean buffet breakfast. This break also gives you time to prepare before continuing to a higher-altitude area.
The bridges of Checacupe
The route continues through Checacupe, where three bridges represent different historical periods: an Inca bridge made with braided fibers, a stone Colonial bridge, and a metal Republican bridge. You will have time to see them before continuing to the ATV base.
Arrival at Ccairahuiri and safety briefing
At the Ccairahuiri base, the instructor will explain how the ATVs work, the safety rules, and the correct way to ride along the route. You will then complete a short practice session. The ride will begin after the instructor confirms that you can operate the vehicle safely.
ATV ride toward Vinicunca
The ATV tour Rainbow Mountain route follows a high-altitude road for approximately 20 to 30 minutes until it reaches the closest authorized point near Vinicunca. Depending on operating conditions and the terrain, a short final walk over inclined or uneven ground may still be required.
Visit to Rainbow Mountain
At Vinicunca, located above 5,000 meters, the guide will explain how different minerals and their oxides create the colored bands visible on the mountain. You will also be able to see the surrounding Andean landscape and Apu Ausangate, whose summit reaches 6,384 meters according to the published itinerary.
You will have time to enjoy the view and take photographs. Although the ATV reduces the walking effort, the altitude remains demanding, so move slowly and follow your guide's instructions.
ATV descent and buffet lunch
After the visit, you will ride back to the base in approximately 20 minutes. The group will then continue to the restaurant for the included buffet lunch.
Return to Cusco
After lunch, the group will begin the drive back to Cusco. Arrival is expected in the afternoon and may vary due to traffic, weather, road conditions, and the group's pace. The final approximate time should be confirmed before departure.

Travelers generally return to Cusco between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, and the pace of the group.
The ATV ride takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes uphill and reaches the closest authorized point to Rainbow Mountain. However, travelers should not assume that the trip involves no walking at all, as there may be a final section on foot over steep or uneven ground. The exact walking distance depends on the route in use, trail conditions, and the authorized ATV parking area, so it should be confirmed before departure.
May through October generally offers drier weather and a better chance of clear mountain views. June, July, and August can be especially cold in the early morning and usually attract more visitors. Rain, fog, hail, or snow are more common from November through March and may partially hide the mountain’s colors or affect road access. Travelers should check the forecast and confirm current access conditions one or two days before the trip.
Taking an ATV significantly reduces the amount of hiking, but the excursion can still be challenging because Rainbow Mountain is located at roughly 5,000 meters, or more than 16,000 feet, above sea level. Travelers should allow time to acclimatize in Cusco, move slowly, and immediately tell the guide if they feel unwell at altitude. To ride the ATV, you must be at least 16 years old and have the consent of an adult. In addition, you must follow the instructor’s safety instructions at all times.
Wear several layers, including a thermal or long-sleeve base layer, a warm fleece or jacket, and a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Comfortable pants and closed-toe shoes with slip-resistant soles are recommended. Travelers should also bring a warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, a small backpack, and the passport or identification requested for the trip. A rain poncho and waterproof protection for personal items are especially useful during the rainy season.
