View tourThe Maras and Moray bike tour takes you to the beautiful Maras Salt Mines and the archaeological site of Moray, two of the main attractions in the Cusco region. The tour through these ancient salt mines is an experience you won’t find anywhere else, as they stretch across the mountainside.
During the Maras Moray bike tour, visitors will learn about Inca history and culture, as well as traditional methods of salt collection. In addition, they’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the agricultural terraces from the top of Moray. This tour is a unique opportunity to gain insight into the Inca civilization.
Day 1
To begin our Maras salt mines and Moray bike tour, we will pick you up from your hotel at approximately 8:00 a.m. Then, we will head by transport to Moray and Maras. Along the way, you will see Andean landscapes surrounded by trees and local wildlife. The Maras Moray MTB route combines cycling through the Andean countryside with visits to the main attractions in this part of the Sacred Valley.
First, we will visit the Chinchero Textile Center. There, you will see how local women make their textiles using ancestral techniques. This center was founded to preserve traditional weaving and pass this knowledge on to future generations.
Next, we will visit the archaeological site of Moray, located 38 km from the city of Cusco. Moray is considered an Inca agricultural laboratory built in the form of rings, specifically made up of four muyus or circles, which are concentric terraces. The lowest terrace is 36 meters in diameter.
Inside the terraces, temperature variations range from 0.5 to 1.5 °C per terrace, creating different microclimates. It is believed that the purpose of this archaeological site was to grow products that did not naturally thrive in this area.
Afterwards, we will visit the Maras Salt Mines, made up of around 3,000 small salt ponds. Each pond produces approximately 50 to 80 kilos of salt per season. It is said that during Inca times they supplied salt to the Cusco region and its surroundings.
These ponds are fed by an underground saltwater spring. The crystallization process can take almost two months per production cycle. Maras salt is highly sought after, and the highest-quality variety is the pink mineral salt. This mineral is also associated with medicinal properties. During the visit, you will be able to purchase products made from this salt.
These two places have a rich history and many interesting facts that our guide will share along the way. After visiting and exploring these spectacular sites, our transport will pick us up and we will return to the city of Cusco, where our tour ends at approximately 2:00 p.m., concluding our tour to Moray and the Maras Salt Mines.
I took a biking tour to the Maras Salt Mines and Moray with CuscoPeru.com, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the very beginning, the team was attentive to how I was feeling and made sure everything went well. Exploring these places on two wheels was a different way to enjoy the Sacred Valley, admiring the landscapes, culture, and history that surround this incredible destination.
I would especially like to thank Ángel, Yuliana, Alonso, Dimas, Erick, Marilu, and Jheferson for their kindness, attention, and for always being willing to help with everything I needed. It was a very special experience, and I am taking home a beautiful memory of this biking adventure. Without a doubt, it is a journey I would love to do again someday with my family.
