SACRED VALLEY - AGUAS CALIENTES

The tour begins early with an excursion to the Sacred Valley, around 7:00 a.m., picking you up from your hotel. We'll start by visiting the Archaeological Center of Pisac, located approximately 45 minutes from Cusco. Pisac will provide you with an insight into the advanced knowledge achieved by the Incas, with its extensive agricultural terraces, architecture, and urban layout. It holds a special charm as it was part of the Qhapaq Ñan (road system) that connected the Manu Biosphere Reserve (southern jungle) and also served as a route to reach Cusco, the center or navel of the world. After visiting the archaeological site of Pisac, we'll explore its quaint town, where you can wander through its streets to reach its famous artisanal market. Here, you'll find a wide variety of original items such as paintings, artwork, keychains, crafts, and more. Around noon, we'll head to the town of Urubamba, where you'll enjoy a buffet lunch, allowing you to savor delicious Peruvian cuisine.

In the afternoon, we'll visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, which served as a strategic center for the military, agriculture, and religion to manage and control the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This is evident from the constructions believed to be used for agricultural storage and military purposes, including walls and watchtowers. It's here in Ollantaytambo where we'll board our train in the late afternoon, heading to Aguas Calientes, a charming town where we'll spend the night, concluding our day.

Itinerary Tourist Packages to Machu Picchu, Cusco and Sacred Valley

DAY 1: CUSCO CITY AND SURROUNDINGS

We will pick you up and welcome you at Cusco airport upon your arrival, then take you to your hotel for check-in and rest. After you've settled in, your experience begins with a tour of the city of Cusco and the various Inca sites around the city, starting at 1:30 PM.

The tour begins at Cusco Cathedral, adorned with intricate woodwork, impressive altars, and beautiful paintings created by local artists from the Cusco School, which contain hidden elements of indigenous thought.

Next, we'll take a short walk through the streets of the historic center towards Qoricancha or the Temple of the Sun. According to chronicles, to enter this temple, one had to fast and go barefoot since it was considered an indigenous sanctuary dedicated to the deities of the Sun God, the Moon, the Stars, the Rainbow, Thunder, and Lightning. Here, you'll appreciate the exquisite stone-cutting work done by the Incas, with the highest level of precision in cutting hard stone, where even a sheet of paper cannot fit. Remarkably, these structures have remained stable to this day, despite earthquakes.

After visiting Qoricancha, we will board transportation that will take us to Sacsayhuaman, located 3 km from Cusco. The Sacsayhuaman plateau offers a panoramic view of the city of Cusco. Sacsayhuaman was built with large limestone blocks weighing between 25 to 130 tons. It consists of three superimposed terraces in a zigzag pattern. This place, due to its size and ample space, was used for gatherings and hosting various festivals like WARACHIKUY and INTI RAYMI.

We will also visit Qenqo, which means "labyrinth" in Quechua. It is located one kilometer from Sacsayhuaman and is constructed with limestone rock. It features stone sculptures within its 500-meter expanse. According to historians, these structures were used for astronomical, religious, embalming, and mummification purposes. Next, we'll explore Puka Pukara, derived from the Quechua words "Puka" (red) and "Pukara" (fortress), meaning "red fortress." It served as a strategic site for control and surveillance of access and exit from the Imperial City of Cusco, acting as a territorial border to divide regions and establish travel regulations.

As the final stop on this tour, we will visit Tambomachay, a resting place located 9 km from Cusco. It's also known as the Inca Baths due to its flowing water or the "Waters of Eternal Youth" due to its constant water flow. Finally, we conclude our City Tour by transporting you back to your respective hotel in Cusco.

  • Entrance tickets to Cusco Cathedral, Qoricancha, Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puka - Pukara, and Tambomachay.

After the guided tour, you'll have free time to explore the town and its surroundings.

To start our tour to Moray and Maras Salt Mines, we will pick you up from your hotel at approximately 07:30 am. We will then head to Moray and the Maras salt mines in our transportation. On the way, you will enjoy beautiful Andean landscapes surrounded by trees and wildlife. First, we will visit the archaeological center of Moray, which is located 38 km from the city of Cusco. Moray is considered an Inca agricultural laboratory built in the form of concentric rings, specifically consisting of 4 veryus or circles. The most profound one is 80 meters deep, with the lowest terrace being 36 meters in diameter.

Within the terraces, temperature variations range from 0.5 to 1.5 °C per terrace, which can reproduce up to 20 different microclimates. It is said that the purpose of this archaeological center was to cultivate products that did not naturally grow in this area.

Next, we will visit the Maras salt mines. As the name suggests, these are salt mines consisting of around 3,000 small pools, with each pool producing approximately 50 to 80 kilograms of salt per season. It is said that these mines served the Incas' needs for salt in the Cusco region and its surroundings. These pools are fed by an underground saltwater spring, and this natural process takes almost two months for one crop season. Maras salt is highly sought after, with the highest quality being pink mineral salt, which also has medicinal properties. Don't forget to purchase some salt-based products along the way.

Certainly, these two places have a rich history and interesting facts that our guide will share with you along the way. After visiting and exploring these spectacular sites, our transportation will pick us up, and we will return to the city of Cusco, where our tour ends at approximately 2:00 pm, concluding our tour to Moray and the Maras salt mines.
