Itinerary Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days

DAY 1: CUSCO | MOLLEPATA - CHALLACANCHA - SORAYPAMPA (HUMANTAY LAKE)

We start our tour by picking you up from your hotel at 05:00 AM. We begin our journey with approximately a 4-hour drive, crossing the picturesque landscapes of Anta and Mollepata, culminating in Challancha. During the first two hours of the trip, we will make a brief stop in Mollepata to provide access to sanitary facilities and the opportunity to explore souvenir shops. You will also have the option to enjoy a light and optional breakfast in this charming town. This starting point immerses us in the cultural and natural richness of the region as we prepare for the exciting experiences that await us on our journey. We continue towards Challacancha, the starting point for our hike. We meet our support staff, and they organize all the equipment and pack mules, and then we begin the trek to Soraypampa (3850 m - 12631 ft), the first camp on our journey. Afterward, we travel 7 km (4.35 miles) in 3 hours to Soraypampa, where we will have lunch at the Salkantay base camp.

After lunch and a short break, we venture to the unforgettable Humantay Lake, located at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level (13779 feet). This impressive body of water, known for its dazzling turquoise color due to the accumulation of minerals in the water, awaits us with an unparalleled visual and spiritual experience. This mountain lake captivates not only with its scenic beauty but is also considered a sacred place by local communities, attracting those seeking a spiritual connection with nature and the surrounding environment.

Once we have explored and enjoyed the serenity of the lake, we return to our camp. This experience will not only leave us with eternal memories of this natural jewel in the region but will also provide a deep appreciation for the connection between humans and nature in this special corner of the Peruvian Andes.

DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA | SALKANTAY PASS - WAYRACPUNKU - CHAULLAY

After an early wake-up with the first light of the day at 05:30 AM and a delicious breakfast, we begin the trek to the highest point of the trail: the Salkantay Pass (4650 m - 15255 ft). The distance is 7 km (4.34 miles) of challenging ascent in 4 hours between the base of the rocky valley and the magnificent Salkantay mountain (6271 m - 20574 ft). Continuing with the climax of today's hike, there is a 5 km (3.1 miles) downhill walk to the lunch site: Huayracmachay.

In the afternoon, after enjoying a delicious meal, we enter the upper Amazon jungle, known as the "cloud forest." This exciting journey will take us through a wide and lush trail in the dense tropical forest, covering a distance of 10 km (6.2 miles) in approximately 3 hours. During this journey, we will be surrounded by biodiversity, crossing through a cloud forest to part of the jungle brow, where endemic birds and a large number of hummingbirds can be observed, abundant due to the variety of multicolored flowers in this area.

This is the most demanding day, with a total walking distance of about 22 km.

DAY 3: CHAULLAY | COLLPAPAMPA - LA PLAYA - LUCMABAMBA

At 06:00 AM, we start our hike towards the warm town of "La Playa," following the trail through the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley. During our journey, we are amazed by the beauty of Collpapampa, also known as the "front of the cloud forest." In this stretch, you will see how the landscape of the area changes, entering a more tropical and lower-altitude landscape, where you can observe the appearance of avocado, banana, coffee, cocoa, pineapple, mandarin trees, etc.

In addition to its diversity of exotic birds. After a delicious lunch in La Playa, we continue our journey with a short walk of approximately 1 hour that will take us to our base camp, Lucmabamba, located at 2100 meters above sea level (7874 feet). This peaceful retreat will allow us to explore the natural treasures around us and appreciate the cultural richness of the region. During our hike, we will also have the opportunity to spot various endemic birds.

In the afternoon, after settling into our camp, it is possible to "take the coffee tour," where you will have a hands-on experience of how coffee is harvested, roasted, ground from the tree to the tasting of this delicious organic coffee.

DAY 4: LUCMABAMBA | LLACTAPATA - HYDROELECTRIC - AGUAS CALIENTES

We start early with a delicious breakfast, then we begin our ascent of approximately 2 hours through an Qapaqñan (real Inca trail) that will give us impressive views of the picturesque Santa Teresa Valley. We will reach the magical site of Llactapata Inca, located right in front of the wonder of Machu Picchu. Here, among the millennia-old stones, we will breathe air loaded with history and magic, connecting with the ancient legends that surround this sacred place. After exploring this enigmatic Llactapata site, we continue our journey with a serene 2-hour downhill walk. In this stretch of the trail, we will witness the harmonious fusion between the lush nature and the footprint of the ancient Inca civilization. Our journey will take us to the Hidroelectrica train station, where we will stop for lunch prepared by our chef.

After lunch, we head towards Intiwatana, an ancient stone monument that served as a sundial in Inca times. This ancestral site will reveal lost secrets in time, offering us a glimpse into the wisdom of ancient cultures. Following our path, we will reach the train tracks that wind their way to the cozy town of Aguas Calientes, the refuge that will welcome us in this unforgettable journey.

At this point, you have two options: the first, if fatigue overwhelms you, you can choose to take the train to Aguas Calientes for an additional cost of $31.00, providing you with a comfortable and peaceful journey. The second option, if you still have the desire to explore, is to walk from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes, a journey that will take you approximately 3 hours following the train track route. This choice, although challenging, will provide you with an immersive experience, allowing you to absorb every detail of the surrounding landscape and connect more deeply with the nature around you. Whatever your decision, these are two good ways to reach Aguas Calientes.

DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

This is the most anticipated day when we will visit one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and UNESCO World Heritage Site - Machu Picchu! We will rise early to climb to the top of Machu Picchu. The entrance control point of Machu Picchu is open from 06:00 to 17:00. We will walk to Machu Picchu (a bus ride is optional for $12.00). Here, we will have a guided tour of approximately 2 hours through this incredible ancient city to visit temples, terraces, palaces, priest houses, the sundial, the industrial sector, and the crop fields. Be amazed at the engineering ingenuity of the Incas, which was so advanced for its time and still partially a mystery today! Without modern tools or even steel and iron to work with, the people who built this city were brilliant in organizing this community in a sustainable and beautiful way on the side of a mountain, even bringing water through channels along their streets for people to use.

After this tour, you can climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (make sure to book in advance to get tickets for these). The Incas considered Huayna Picchu a sacred place and used it for religious and astronomical ceremonies. It is also believed to have been the home of Inca priests and elites. Each mountain takes about 3 hours to climb and descend. Another lower-impact option for those who do not need an additional ticket is to walk to the Sun Gate, the main entrance from the Inca Trail (this takes about 2 or 2.5 hours round trip). Another option is to walk to see the Inca Bridge. You can stay and enjoy this magical city for more than 7 hours.

INCLUDES:

  • Briefing: Information about the tour the night before departure. In any case, you must confirm the time and place.
