It was founded in 1969 by the Marianist Brother Doctor Robert Wood, who gathered a group of teachers related among them who in parallel organized the Pre Columbian Studies Institute, who was born with the Museum in 1970, thus starting the professional career of archeology in college, constituting the first outside Lima.

The Museum has eight halls presenting cultural development of the region Arequipa from high Andean hunter-gatherers (10,000 BC) to the arrival of Europeans in the fourteenth century and ending in the Republic.

Room 1:

Period Pre agro Potter: Represented by the pre ceramic rockshelter of Pintasayoc, stage where lytic stage is developed (arrowheads, knives and scrapers), Early Intermediate Period: It had Nazca influence that reaches Arequipa along the coast to near its capital. They are farmers, ranchers, fishermen and shellfish gatherers. Their pottery is tricolor.

Middle Horizon: Tiwanaku element function and Wari, generates a peculiar style in ceramics and textiles with geometric decorations.

Room 2:

Late Intermediate Period. Local Realms Lordship Churajon: Occupies the provinces of Islay (Arequipa) and Sánchez Cerro (Moquegua), devoted to livestock, infrastructure developed agriculture terraces of Arequipa and ceramic tricolor (red, black and cream) with geometric decoration.

Room 3:

United Chiribaya. Moquegua occupied the field, its biggest developments were: Ceramics (geometric decoration and use of 5 colors) and textiles (woven tapestries simple up). Late Horizon United Tahuantinsuyo. It was developed in the valley of Cusco occupying almost the whole coast, the highlands of South America. Its territory equivalent to 3 times the Roman Empire.
