It was founded in 1969 by the Marianist Brother Doctor Robert Wood, who gathered a group of teachers related among them who in parallel organized the Pre Columbian Studies Institute, who was born with the Museum in 1970, thus starting the professional career of archeology in college, constituting the first outside Lima.

The Museum has eight halls presenting cultural development of the region Arequipa from high Andean hunter-gatherers (10,000 BC) to the arrival of Europeans in the fourteenth century and ending in the Republic.

Room 1:

Period Pre agro Potter: Represented by the pre ceramic rockshelter of Pintasayoc, stage where lytic stage is developed (arrowheads, knives and scrapers), Early Intermediate Period: It had Nazca influence that reaches Arequipa along the coast to near its capital. They are farmers, ranchers, fishermen and shellfish gatherers. Their pottery is tricolor.

Room 2:

Room 3:

Late Horizon United Tahuantinsuyo. It was developed in the valley of Cusco occupying almost the whole coast, the highlands of South America. Its territory equivalent to 3 times the Roman Empire. Room 6:

The Incas managed to organize the Tahuantinsuyo in less than a century. They excel funerary bundles that are woven in Ichu, also find textiles, metallurgy, ceramics.

Room 7:

Andean Textiles. Textiles production was cotton, camelid wool (alpaca and llama vicuña.) and feathers. The uses of textiles was: as clothing, fishing nets, bags, belts, blankets, hats, turbans, among others.

Room 8:

Colonial Era: Time from arrival of the Spanish in Arequipa. The best examples are the menajeria in glass, pottery and iron objects brought from Europe.
