Fundados en 1605, la iglesia y el monasterio debieron reedificarse luego del sismo de 1650. La iglesia atesora hermosos altares barrocos y un soberbio púlpito. Los altares fueron obra de los maestros Pedro de Oquendo y Diego Martínez de Oviedo (ambos del s. XVII.) Sus óleos están firmados por Juan Espinoza de los Monteros y Lorenzo Sánchez de Medina en el segundo tercio del siglo XVII.

Posee un altar mayor de cedro dorado con estilo mezclado, en la porción central y hacia arriba está la imagen en bulto del "Sagrado Corazón de Jesús" y más abajo Santa Catalina y Santo Domingo; tiene un púlpito tallado en cedro y otros cuatro retablos menores todos dorados.
Posee un magnífico museo y, además, las religiosas son conocidas por que elaboran exquisitos dulces de mazapán y almendras.
