Callejón de Huaylas - Huaraz

It is the paradise to do adventure sports and the place of birth of the oldest civilization of Peru, Chavin Culture.

Location: North coast of Peru

Area: 1 627 Sq miles

Capital: Chiclayo (95 feet above sea level)

The lowest altitude: 13 feet above sea level (Pimentel)

The highest altitude: 10 100 feet over sea level (Incahuasi)

Climate: The annual average temperature of 62.6 ºF (the highest temperature of 64.4ºF and the lowest one of 44.6 ºF). The rainy season is from November to March.

How to get to Huaraz?

By land: Buses heading north along the lenght of El Callejón de Huaylas stop near the corner of Fitzcarrald and Raimondi when coming from Lima. Local transport goes as far as Caraz. Minibuses for Caraz (US$ 1.30, 1 ½ hours) leave every few minutes during the day from Centenario on the north side of the river. These will stop you in any of the towns between Huaraz and Caraz.There are also Minibuses for El Callejon de Huaylas to Recuay, Catac and other villages.

The Callejon de Huaylas has beautiful Andean places, amazing landscapes, high snow-covered mountains and thousands of small turquoise blue lakes in the White Mountain range. (Coordillera Blanca). It is the paradise to do adventure sports and the place of birth of the oldest civilization of Peru, Chavin Culture. There is also the National Park of Huascarán, declared Natural Heritage of the Humanity. There, are located the oldest buildings carved in rock of Chavin. Huaraz is the capital of the department and it is the point where one can start to visit the area.
