The actual district of Vilcabamba is one of nine that make up the large providence of La Convencion that occupied the majority of the territory inside the department of Cusco. To the northeast side of the department of Cusco you can find the Cordillera de Vilcabamba, is one of the three chains of mountains that make up the east Andes, characterized by a landscape with strong contrasts, with very high mountain chains, deep canyons and inter-andean valleys. It is a product of the erosion of a complex system of water courses that drain to the jungle.
In this area there is a great number of archeological remains that date from the pre-Inca and
Inca times, like the archeological remains of Rosaspata-Vitkos that is located to the southeast of the national territory.
The access to this archeological place is by: the road Cusco - Quillabamba at 68.4 miles from Chaullay from where there is a road without payment that leads to Huancacalle from were you go for 1 mile to the town of Rosaspata, which is between the eastern Andes and the formation of Vilcabamba.
How do I get to Vilcabamba?
To get there, you have to hike for several days. The most frequent starting point is the village of Huancacalle, which can be reached by trucks from Quillabamba (it takes 8 hours to get Quillabamba by car from Cusco).
