Cusco is losing millions [english]
Due to the isolation of the Machu Picchu citadel in Cuzco, travel agencies and tourism have lost around $ 1 million per day. Approximately 175 000 Cusco livelihood depend on it.
In 2009, it received about 800 000visitas and about 2 200 of them came to Machupicchu daily. The Ministries of Economy and Finance said that this figure represents 90% of income for this sector of the country.
The president of the Association of Tourism Agencies, Marco Ochoa, said they will take emergency measures to make sure that Machu Picchu doesn’t stop recieveing toursits, also indicated that the airlift from Cuzco (110 km) would be the immediate, and may last two months, although the price of this trip would be higher compared to the train, which by now is about $ 120, including entrance to the ruins.
Rail operators: PeruRail, Inca and Andean Railways Rail were greatly affected and even more so because the latter would start operating in the month of February.
