Here you got some places you must consider when you take a backpacking trip to south america.

Cusco has a beautiful landscape that conjugates with the blue sky, white clouds and awesome mountains, by its roads is possible to get to know the heritage inherited that give a testimony of its art, even now when you walk in its streets you can see some rocks intelligently united and the old houses built by Spanish over important Inca foundations, it’s impossible to don’t notice the importance that this city had in the Inca period. Few places in Peru have a magic aura as Cusco has which was the center of cult of the Sun, it received big ceremonies where much people came to. Here you can visit churches, museums, archeological places and many other sites, for this you need to get the Tourist Ticket fee that allows you to visit the 16 most important places of Cusco.

Machu Picchu. The historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu keeps inside of it its essence of the beauty of the holiness, which harmonizes with the natural landscape, being an important scientist and cultural place, as an expression of the architectonic development of the Inca culture, in the area there are 33 archeological places connected by the Inca Trail.

Nazca Lines. The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert of Peru. They have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometres (50 mi) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana. Although some local geoglyphs resemble Paracas motifs, scholars believe the Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 400 and 650 AD. The hundreds of individual figures range in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, fish, sharks or orcas, llamas, and lizards.

Lima: Most often Lima is the entry and exit point for backpackers travelling Peru. Travellers tend to overlook Lima, heading straight out to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. If you do have some time to spend in Lima, check out Plaza De Armas. The plaza is lined with many beautiful buildings, including the Presidential Palace. Take a quick stroll to the Monasterio de San Francisco, where not only can you tour the church, but you can also visit the underground catacombs.

A quick look to the inca’s sacred citadel as we got near to celebrate a hundred years of its discovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911.

The Discovery

An expedition leaded by the american explorer Hiram Bingham arrived in the July 1911 to the inca’s citadel of Machu picchu, they found it covered by vegetation accumulated over centuries of neglect. The discovery was anounced on an special edition of the National Geographic’s magazine. Little had to wait to travelers and academics from many diferent countries to arrive to Machu Picchu.

To celebrate the centenary, several activities have started, they will go on until next year’s July.

The First Inca trek

Since its broadcast on National Geographic, the international scientific community put their eyes on Machu Picchu. That same year, 1913 began to build the railway on the route Cusco-Quillabamba, but as was done in stages, only in 1928 arrived at the station of Machu Picchu, allowing ever since the beginning of tourism to this place. However, until 1939 only once or twice a month small groups rose slowly on foot or by mule to the citadel.

This year was another scientific expedition to Machu Picchu, this time funded by Axel Werner Gren, owner of Electrolux and other industries and is considered one of the richest men in Sweden. The expedition was led by Paul Fejos, physician and filmmaker Hungarian-American who was assisted Mattos executive Alberto Giesecke (son of the rector of the Universidad San Antonio Abad help two decades ago to Bingham, currently at its 96 years, live in Lima). This expedition, consisting of ethnologists and linguists fitólogos, traveled, studied and cleaned up the Inca trail that decades later became one of the most popular forms of access to Machu Picchu.
