Paleontology in Cusco [English]

A scientific expedition discovered the intact remains of a Megatherium (giant sloth) of about 5 million years of Espinar province of Cusco,
“This fossil is particularly important as it is the most complete specimen discovered in the Americas, dating back 5 million years old,” he told AFP the scholar from the city of Cusco.

The fossil was discovered unexpectedly megatherium by employees while conducting excavations for the foundations of a house in the city of Yauri, Espinar province area extremely rich in fossils.

WARACHICUY EN CUSCO PERÚ [ESPAÑOL]

El Warachicuy es una fiesta, una celebración que se realiza todos los años, en la explana de Sacsayhuamán en el Cusco.

En “Los Comentarios Reales” del Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, se consigna con precisión y detalle cada etapa, cada momento de esta ceremonia de iniciación a la vida de adulto.

Reciben el reconocimiento con la entrega de las “waras” que son unas pantalonetas de bayeta que sólo los hombres pueden usar y se transforma en la insignia de la mayoría de edad.

Si bien es una fiesta histórica, recién en 1969 se realiza por primera vez y en la que participan más de 1500 jóvenes estudiantes del Colegio Nacional de Ciencias del Cusco.

En el antiguo Tahuantinsuyo, la disciplina social, el éxito militar se habría logrado a través de esta competencia que va más allá de lo deportivo. El Warachicuy es un rito sagrado y un compromiso para con todo lo que representaba la identidad de su propia cultura

Las pruebas son reales y demandan concentración, fuerza, equilibrio, habilidad y rapidez mental para sortear los riesgos y peligros que presentan la altura o el fuego.

En la actualidad, el ritual del Warachicuy, que se realiza en septiembre, sigue la tradición de otras batallas rituales cusqueñas ancestrales como el Chieraje.

Y es que toda la explanada se convierte en un conjunto de pruebas que simultáneamente se producen y que uno quisiera verlas puntualmente. El color, los sonidos de los pututus, las danzas guerreras completan el espectacular despliegue.

The Municipality of Cusco organized through the Management of Tourism, Education, Culture and the Environment the Theater Festival cusqueño called: “Kusi tinkuy 2011.”
The activity will be from the 25 to August 29 of this year; that is the reason for receiving the inscriptions of the theater groups wishing to participate in the Festival in the local Municipal Library.

Hallan tumba de gobernante Wari en el Cusco [Español]

En la provincia de la Convención – Cusco, Arqueólogos peruanos encontraron restos de más de 1200 años de antigüedad en los cuales se hallaron restos humanos. En  el complejo arqueológico de Espiritupampa en Vilcabamba se descubrió una tumba que habría sido ocupada por un gobernante Wari “Señor Vilcas”, que tuvo su apogeo entre los años 600 y 1200 de nuestra era.
En el contexto funerario se halló una tumba con un pectoral de plata en forma de “Y”, dos brazos laterales con figuras de felinos, una máscara, brazaletes de oro, dos báculos de madera de Chonta (madera del lugar), 234 láminas de plata, de las cuales el 90% tiene forma ovoide y el restante es circular.
Todos los aditamentos tienen el estilo Wari y los objetos hallados eran usados en el entierro de la nobleza de esa cultura pre inca.

“Lo que hemos hallado es una tumba del Señor de Wari cubierta con dos lajas de piedra, lleva consigo un pectoral, brazaletes y cetros de oro y plata” dijo a la prensa el director del INC en Cusco, Juan García.

New Discoveries: 50 Chullpas Pre-Incas in Cusco

During the investigation that was conducted product of a desecration of graves in the province of Chumbivilcas archaeologists from the regional management of culture cusco located the remains of about 50 chullpas preinca. These are located in higher areas Livitaca basin.

It was noted that the chullpas are within Chirisiri complex and could belong to the ethnic Cana and Inca, who resided in the provinces of Canchis, Espinar, Canas and Chumbivilcas.
Although many of the graves have been desecrated there are still some that remain intact.
