Cock of the Rock or Tunqui. [English]

peruvian amazonThe Cock of the Rock is a native of South America, in the forests of the high jungle of Peru. In Peru is also known as Tunqui (in Quechua Language).

It is one of the most spectacular birds of the world. Its plumage and colorful display for courtship, like any bird of paradise.

Its exotic shape is very popular, because his figure has been captured in prints, paintings and photographs that are posted everywhere.

This species has a large sexual dimorphism, as the male and female have very different physical. The male is of medium size, with a special colored plumage that combines the black, red and silver. The female, however, has a very dull plumage, brownish tones dominated.

This austere coloration of the female plays an adaptive function, if it were bright as of the male could not bring up chicks without attracting the attention of predators (especially eagles, ferrets, coatis and snakes).

The reproduction begins in October and ends with hatching since November to February, which lasts about 40 days. Three months after chicks leave the nest.

Members Paucartambo station in Cusco, found a cock of the rock, endangered species, when they patrolled the road Paucartambo-Kosñipata-Manu National Park, near to the jurisdiction of the district Conchupata.
