The Cock of the Rock is a native of South America, in the forests of the high jungle of Peru. In Peru is also known as Tunqui (in Quechua Language).

It is one of the most spectacular birds of the world. Its plumage and colorful display for courtship, like any bird of paradise.

Its exotic shape is very popular, because his figure has been captured in prints, paintings and photographs that are posted everywhere.

This species has a large sexual dimorphism, as the male and female have very different physical. The male is of medium size, with a special colored plumage that combines the black, red and silver. The female, however, has a very dull plumage, brownish tones dominated.

This austere coloration of the female plays an adaptive function, if it were bright as of the male could not bring up chicks without attracting the attention of predators (especially eagles, ferrets, coatis and snakes).

The reproduction begins in October and ends with hatching since November to February, which lasts about 40 days. Three months after chicks leave the nest.

El Gallito de las Rocas es natural de America del Sur, en los bosques de la selva alta de Peru. En Peru es conocida tambien como Tunqui (en quechua).

Es una de las aves mas espectaculares del mundo. Su plumaje y colorido despliegue para cortejo, iguala a cualquier ave del paraiso.

Su forma exotica es muy popular, pues su figura ha sido plasmado en grabados, pinturas y fotografias que se publican por doquier.

Esta especie presenta un gran dimorfismo sexual, pues el macho y la hembra tienen físicos muy distintos. El macho es de tamaño mediano, con un extraordinario plumaje que combina los colores negro, rojo y plateado. La hembra, en cambio, tiene un plumaje muy apagado, dominado por tonos amarronados.

Esta coloración austera de la hembra cumple una función adaptativa, pues si tuviera colores brillantes como el macho no podría criar a los polluelos sin llamar la atención de los depredadores (sobre todo águilas, hurones, coatíes y serpientes).
